Today it said, "WIDEN THE GAP" Yesterday it was, "PRICE ME OUT OF EDUCATION"
They repeat the word fair as if that'll take up more space than the figures they've announced. Deeming the cuts made yesterday 'fair' when the bottom half of the population lose 3x (0.03% to the richest half's 0.01%) as much as the top half when they are on a knife edge anyway, having to rephrase measures brought in by Labour to make the 'lines go in the right way' is not fair. It's shady. And it's lies.
Cheering as you announce the biggest cuts this country has ever seen. Well that is just absolute and pure fucking evil. Making up random figures for what Labour 'might have' cut, is arbitrary and to be frank, Daily Mail politics.
"We have seen people cheering the deepest cuts to public spending in living memory. For some people opposite this is their ideological objective. For many of them, not all of them, this is what they came into politics for." - Alan Johnson
The fact is that we cannot allow these maniacs to run our country into the ground. I wasn't alive for the 80s and I can see what effect that had. What did people expect of a Conservative government? What did people expect of voting for the Lib Dems and their right leaning leader? This isn't someone else's fight, it's your jobs and education and ability to buy a house or make clothes or art or become a writer. We cannot let this happen, it's our generation that will take the force.
All these figures are from Channel 4 News. You can watch the report here. And please, if you are British especially, please watch it. This is not how a country should be run. In what way does it make sense to pull the carpet out from underneath the bottom? The idea of how many people abuse the benefit system has been wildly overestimated and you're scrutinizing the people that need the money most. These are the people that cannot support themselves and did nothing to cause the deficit in the first place, when for the people that did all that's happening is a little more tax here and there.
How can that be called fair?
PS. I'm sorry if you don't care, or you're not from the UK, or you were only here for pictures. But this is important and it effects everything from British fashion to culture to education. It's everything and everyone.
I totally agree. I can feel some dark times coming.
ReplyDeleteWhat annoys me is how stupidly people voted, I mean come on, all they needed to do was read the definition of conservative to understand that everything they were (and are) saying is lies.
It's pretty shit that they're in power for the next four years.
i think the country is going to shit at the moment. nobody wants these cuts except from the ones up top who benefit from them. it's ridiculous really. i mean, i don't know very much about politics. infact, i know nothing. but i do know that cutting important things like nhs costs and policing costs are going to end up being bad decisions.
ReplyDeletebut hey ho, who cares as long as the rich are getting richer?;|
xxx
YESYESYES. I love you for writing this. It's pretty much all I've talked about recently and everyone of my age seems to be thinking "we're the last year of uni applicants that it won't affect so why does it matter?". Grr.
ReplyDeleteAnd I totally agree with the whole point about not being alive in the 80s but knowing how shit it was. I really can't make sense of the fact that I can see this but people who suffered then just happily signed themselves up to let it all happen again. The fucking Tories haven't changed their policies since Thatcher, yet people think somehow it will all be different this time around. I can even understand why upper/middle class people would vote Torie, but so many normal working class people voted for them and I really don't see how anybody could be so ignorant.
Moany moan moan.
my family are at the bottom end, it's not going to be pretty
ReplyDeleteOh and baroness warsi is a bloody idiot too. Just thought I'd add that.
ReplyDeleteTory/Lib Dems are just a pile of fail. I don't know where they think this magical solution to the country's debt problem will come from - at any rate the answer is definitely not to put half a million public sector workers out of jobs because 1) they'll all go on the dole (whoops!), but also 2) they won't have the disposable income to go and buy that new flat-screen telly and reinvest in the economy. So big business will feel the knock-on effects of nobody having any spare cash to chuck around. I despise George Osbourne and his slimy, podgy, self-serving twatty little face. & all his colleagues.
ReplyDeleteOh & if you want a laugh, compare the benefit fraud statistics with tax evasion statistics of high earners. It makes me sick that they've used the notion that a tiny percentage of people abuse the benefits system to justify their fucking disgraceful plunder of the welfare state just when people will need it most.
It's so lovely to hear so many people that give a shit. Honestly, I had become doubtful.
ReplyDeleteSerina: is that the women from Mama & Papas (or something?) who said the private sector couldn't support people coming from the 'inflated' wages available in the public sector? 'inflated' meaning in real terms, 'minimum wage'. Otherwise, who is she? Always up for finding a good hate figure.
Hannah X: even if you know nothing it's important to care, and support and shout loud even if it's just 'this isn't fair!'
Alicia: It's not so much the Tories I have the biggest issue with as they are pretty much a lost cause. It's the people who convinced themselves that the Labour government was 'so fucked' that the Lib Dems, who would NEVER WIN and had a RIGHT LEANING LEADER, were a better option. It took votes away from Labour and led us to this. And Nick Clegg doesn't even have the decency to stick up for the one thing Lib Dems ever actually stood for (not raising uni fees)
Siobhan: Women and young people (shock) are baring the brunt of the cuts. Oh and the disabled, because of course they don't need a mobility allowance (!) The most vulnerable are being hit and like you say there's no way to get out of it when you target the bottom. The bankers are pretty much laughing. The tax something that Labour brought in to regulate tax evasion and the banks (to a certain extent) has quietly been demolished in the background by the cuts and coalition. And it's in fact been predicted by the IRS that the bankers will actually benifit from the 2.5bn the government are proposing to get for them, as they are having to bend it so it's NO MORE THAN 2.5 rather than, as much as it should be.
I mean it's just absolutely astonishing that they are getting away with this. At the end of the day, if we just roll over and take it AGAIN it will go ahead. So please, however busy you are, tell at least one person who 'doesn't think it effects them' that it does. Hand out flyers, or go on demonstrations, but most importantly, talk to people!
Jess, she's in the house of lords and I wasn't aware of that, however she's the woman who is Pakistani yet is a member of the conservative party.
ReplyDeleteAs possibly a second generation immigrant to this country, I find it absolutely ridiculous that she's part of the conservative party. Without labour, would she be here? I think not. Just because her dad came into a bit of money, she obviously felt she was ready to be a conservative.
i just can't bear to watch the news or read about this at the moment because it just seems like such bleak times are ahead. my parents worked in the public sector during the 80's & so i was brought up in a very anti-thatcher/anti-tory household...i didn't vote lib dem either & i'm so glad i doubted nick clegg & voted labour (like i always have done!), although it didn't do much good in the end :( still, at least i can claim i didn't contribute towards bringing this current government to power!
ReplyDeleteall the cuts are far too sudden & the reasoning behind it all seems to defy logic! how can cutting jobs & creating yet more unemployment stimulate the economy? I also agree with you about the benefit system & those who abuse it...yes, there are always going to be a few who manage to get away with conning the system but the vast majority deserve their benefits & shouldn't be scrutinised so closely under such harsh new rules. i think its disgusting that some disabled people are going to be denied their benefits & forced back into work...& oh god, don't even get me started on university tuition fees....etc etc etc!
i seriously doubt that many people care about this subject either...people i know just aren't prepared to talk about politics, like its a taboo subject or something! i don't claim to be the most knowledgeable person in regard to politics but i've made an effort to read about the budget & find out what the cuts are & what they will mean, because this really will effect my life & standard of living...i don't think enough people even care enough to do the same.
rant over...for now (i hope that all made sense, i'm practically asleep!) :) thank you for bringing this up on your blog!
